On our 3rd official day in Paris, we decided to stay in our neighborhood, and explore Monmarte. We hiked up the hills and tiny winding streets that looked straight out of the turn-of-the-century. I don't think much has changed here, except now there is a million tourists. You may remember this area from Amalie the movie.
The Sacré-Coeur was built in 1873 by the French government as a "symbol of strength and confidence" after years of devastation following the Franco-Prussian War. It is made out a "self cleaning" stone that released calcium each time it rains. So it looks dirty in bad weather, and then the sun comes out and re-bleaches it.
