Monmarte & The Sacré-Coeur

On our 3rd official day in Paris, we decided to stay in our neighborhood, and explore Monmarte. We hiked up the hills and tiny winding streets that looked straight out of the turn-of-the-century. I don't think much has changed here, except now there is a million tourists. You may remember this area from Amalie the movie.

I enjoyed a yummy ice cream cone on the steps below the Sacré- Coeur.
I must admit, I am a little bummed... french dogs do NOT respond at all to a whistle or a kiss noise... I've never felt so ignored by dogs in my life. But this one was too cute to resist, and he finally did look at me from his shop door.

This is the view from the Scaré Coeur, plus a million tourists on it's steps.
The Sacré-Coeur was built in 1873 by the French government as a "symbol of strength and confidence" after years of devastation following the Franco-Prussian War. It is made out a "self cleaning" stone that released calcium each time it rains. So it looks dirty in bad weather, and then the sun comes out and re-bleaches it.
Waaaaay too many fuckin' people were there.

A "bird-eye" view of the view of the city from the Sacré-Coeur.

Here is the last windmill in Paris, also on the street that Van Gough lived on.
